High carbon steel sheets and plates are tough, wear-resistant materials intended for use in applications that demand high strength, hardness, and wear resistance. These steels contain more carbon than low and medium carbon products and are used for heavy industrial and mechanical applications. All high carbon steel plates and sheets can be supplied in a range of different thicknesses and surface finishes depending upon customer needs and can be supplied annealed, hardened, or tempered. Their high performance when subjected to pressure and friction make high carbon steel sheets and plates a highly sought-after product in toolmaking, structural parts, and engineering.
High carbon steel generally has carbon contents from 0.50% to 1.00%, and manganese content from 0.60% to 0.90%. The material’s composition provides it with high tensile strength (typically 600 to 900 MPa) and high surface hardness after adequate heat treatment. The steel also retains high machinability in its annealed condition but low weldability because of its carbon content. Once it has been hardened and tempered, it exhibits superior wear resistance while retaining sufficient toughness to withstand mechanical stress and fatigue.
